The Musée des beaux-arts of Rennes graciously provided information for completing this description.
This painting is no longer attributed to Jacques d'Arthois in the museum’s collection.
It is probably a door overlay that has its counterpart in the Louvre (inv. 8812, see https://collections.louvre.fr/ark:/53355/cl010056566). Both works were originally part of the Louvre collections. The one in Rennes was sent to the museum in 1872 as a deposit and its ownership was transferred to the city of Rennes in 2016. Both works were originally oval in format. The one in the Louvre was enlarged and transformed into a rectangle.
The paintings in the Louvre and Rennes, once attributed to the 19th-century painter Louis Boulanger, are now classified as 18th-century anonyms. However, these two works have never been studied in depth.
The work is in poor condition and is currently partially covered with protective paper.
